Today the first grade class at Maple Grove was fortunate enough to go to the Merrill school forest. The topic of study was sound waves and our sense of hearing. Students began the morning with a morning walk where they stopped frequently to aknowledge the sounds around them while in nature. They were then asked the STUMPING question, “if a tree drops and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?”Everything from the running water of a creek, to the branches breaking in a woods. After relating sound, vibration, and sense in the woods, the study was taken inside where students created a membranophone. The activity of making a “membranophone” teaches students about sound, vibration, and pitch. The connections the first graders made between sound and the outdoors was amazing! The group was even to able to defeat Mr. Noland in a game of stumping by the sound heard when your eyes are covered with a blindfold. As always Mr. Noland and his team made the day wonderful and educational! Thank you to the chaperones who were able to join us😊🌲🌳🎼

Sometimes students have physical talents, sometimes students have academic talents and sometimes students have both. On March 12th, twelve preliminary qualifiers advanced to Maple Grove Charter School's Spelling Bee finale. Three students from each second, third, fourth and fifth grades competed to have the best spelling talents of all. These students included: Harper S., Easton H., Bria Y., Jaxon S., Sadie S., Winfred A., Clay S., Cali S, Justin S., Maxwell C., Willow S. and Autumn S. After several intense rounds that included perseverance, good sportsmanship and encouragement from the audience; Justin S. (4th grade) earned 1st place, Willow S. (5th grade) earned 2nd place and Bria Y. (2nd grade) earned 3rd place. Congratulations to all whom participated. They really inspired others to make this their talent too!

🍁 Sap Season is in Full Swing at Maple Grove! 🍁 Our favorite time of year is up and running—SAP SEASON! We’ve tapped 500 trees on pipeline and 211 trees with bags, giving our learners hands-on experience in maple syrup production. Students are learning about the differences between a vacuum pump system and gravity flow, sugar content, and even comparing sap yields—28 gallons per pipeline tap vs. 10 gallons per bag tap! A HUGE thank you to our amazing families and community volunteers who helped us tap all those trees! Our students head out almost daily, demonstrating stewardship and perseverance as they collect sap and take part in this incredible learning experience. 🍁💛 #MapleGroveCharter #SapSeason #HandsOnLearning #CRISPtraits

Maple Grove was blessed with a visit from the Echo Dance Team from NYC! Their upbeat dancing and singing performance engaged students while also incorporating topics of respect, responsibility, and perseverance. Other topics in the assembly were anti-bullying, kindness, hard work, believing in yourself, and good personal choices. This performance was made possible through the AODA (Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse) grant.

Ms. Etten's 1st graders have been hard at work on their bird unit. They have taken it on to maintain and fill the bird feeders, which has proven to be a very busy job as the birds come out with nicer weather. In addition, the learning was more exciting with the help of a guest, Jennifer, from Wild Birds Unlimited! Thanks to her generosity and willingness to come read and teach the class, we are able to know what type of seed to supply the feeders with based on our habitats and environment. Wild Birds Unlimited has also been gracious enough to donate future seed! While we are quick to only think of the birds that visit our feeders, we are also preparing to care for the owls that call our area home. The students constructed and painted Barred Owl Nest Boxes that will be placed 15 ft above the ground in trees around school property. Thank you to Mr. Kariger who helped by pre-cutting and drilling all the holes in the boxes as well as coming back to help volunteer his time in constructing the boxes with kids. Thank you as well to Mrs. Kearns who came in to volunteer her time in the construction day!

Heritage Hills docent, Lori Vieau Jarvenpaa came to Maple Grove Charter School's fourth grade classroom recently. The students had been learning about the Wisconsin Tribal Nations and about the positive/negative French and British interactions before, during and after the time period of the American Revolution and the Revolutionary War. Lori came wearing authentic clothing, brought real trading furs and numerous historical artifacts from that time period. She had so much relevant information to share seeing as she is a true Metis (descendant from the Menominee Bear Clan and from the French-Canadian fur traders). The students were able to trade their furs for European goods, as well as, ask very inquisitive questions. We truly have great opportunities at Maple Grove and have wonderful connections that make these types of learning moments possible.

Volunteering to share her knowledge to our learning.
Picking an item to rade for European goods.
A piece of metal stamped with the specific WI Tribal Clan.
So many different types of furs.
A leather, beaded bag.
They smoked the skunk smell out of the pelts.
Bead work on a moccassin.
A cup made from animal horns.
A carved drinking spoon that hung from the birch bark canoes.
Seeing maple sap turn into a different form than the students are used to seeing.
The School District of Athens will be closed today, Wednesday, March 5 due to inclement weather. There will be no afterschool activities or athletic events.

Wisconsin Representative Karen Hurd came to visit Maple Grove Charter School's 4th grade class. In honor of Dr. Seuss week, she started out with a read aloud called True Friend-False Friend (Mr. Sugar Comes to Call) written by Karen Hurd which she donated to our class. Turns out that she was a nutritionist and an author before entering politics. She did a wonderful job explaining the complicated process of how an idea becomes an actual bill by giving a real-life concern from one of her local constituents; allowing sap haulers to be exempt from the Spring road weight limits as her example. So many of the students could relate to this concern seeing as the majority of them; including our school are sap producers. We look forward to seeing Representative Hurd again in a couple of weeks when we travel to the Madison State Capitol for a tour.

Rep. Hurd reading her very own authored book to the class.
Rep. Hurd talking about the amount of pages (1,964) that a current bill she is currently working on has.
Students using their CRISP traits as they listened to our guest speaker, Rep. Hurd
Each student received a current WI map as a souvenir. They are excited about their upcoming 2.5 hour road trip to the Madison State Capitol soon.
Come join Maple Grove Charter School at the Hamburg Community Hall for some delicious pancakes with "real" Maple Syrup on Sunday, March 30th!
