During their library time, the 5th grade at Athens Elementary worked on their writing and speaking skills with PopTarts! The students had to figure out which type of PopTart they received and then describe it to the rest of the class. The class would then guess which flavor it was. It was a delicious time!
The Athens Board of Education unanimously approve the following referendum resolution:
RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE SCHOOL DISTRICT BUDGET TO EXCEED REVENUE LIMIT FOR FOUR YEARS FOR NON-RECURRING PURPOSES.
BE IT RESOLVED by the School Board of the School District of Athens, Marathon and Taylor Counties, Wisconsin that the revenues included in the School District budget be authorized to exceed the revenue limit specified in Section 121.91, Wisconsin Statutes, by $1,670,000 for the 2023-2024 school year, and by $1,200,000 per year for the 2024-2025 school year through the 2026-2027 school year, for non-recurring purposes consisting of operational and maintenance expenses. Adopted and recorded January 16, 2023.

The National Honor Society (NHS) of Athens High School rang the bells for the Salvation Army of Marathon County this past weekend in Athens. Many thanks are given for the community support they receive. Over $500 was raised in 3 days and 8 shifts. Community service is very important to NHS members.

Voters in the School District of Athens did not approve either of the District’s two referendum questions. The first question asked voters for permission to exceed the District’s revenue limits by $900,000 for 2022-23 and by $1.67 million each subsequent year. The money would have been used to pay for general operating expenses in light of the District’s significant budget shortfalls. The second question asked for permission to borrow $5.525 million to use for deferred maintenance and facility improvements.
The Board of Education will discuss the referendum outcomes at its next meeting.

REFERENDUM UPDATE: If approved, the referendum tax impact decreases due to additional state aid. Why? On October 15, our District was informed of additional state aid that results in a reduction to the property tax mill rate. Once again Make a Difference Day is a huge success! Athens High School National Honor Society (NHS) teams up with Athens Acres 4-H to rake yards of the elderly in the village of Athens. Leaves were raked and hauled away from eleven yards in three hours. This is a great showing of teamwork and community service!
